Forensic Chemistry

If you’re a fan of the TV-adventure series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation or Bones and see yourself pursuing a career in that field, then you may want to consider taking up forensic chemistry.   Forensic science is the field in chemistry which deals with the analysis of various substances that are linked to the commission of a crime.

For example, the tests used in determining blood stains on a murder weapon and determining bullet fragments left on the victims clothes.  In the past, to become a crime scene investigator or forensic chemist one had to have a degree in Chemistry and a degree/ minor in criminal studies.  However today, with the technological advancement, many colleges and universities offer a specialized course in forensic science.

In forensic chemistry, one can take a microscopic view of substances. Whether trying to narrow down possible drugs in a murder to evaluating a large number of fibers, a forensic chemist can help determine vital elements in a crime scene. The evidence, supported by forensic chemistry, can build a strong case in court.

When one becomes a forensic chemist, one isn’t limited to the medical laboratory. Chemists can be assigned to the field collecting data. Forensic chemists, depending on their expertise, maybe asked to evaluate a scene and help build a profile. However, forensic chemists can only provide observations based on the evidence. They are not equipped or authorized to determine malicious intent.

Individuals who excel in forensic science are those who are very meticulous, disciplined and extremely analytical. There is no margin for error in this field, especially when lives are dependent on the correct findings of forensic chemists.

People who wish to pursue a degree in forensic chemistry may find a lot of opportunities in the police force, coroner’s office, bomb squads, private labs and even the FBI or CIA.
