- Forensic Chemistry
Not surprisingly, there is an increasing interest in forensic chemistry by students because of the hit TV show CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). It is fascinating to many that forensic specialists are needed in crime scenes using techniques usually provided by specialists in biomedical fields. Now, to augment any undergraduate degree, there are certificates, undergrad Bachelor’s degrees and even post-grade Master’s degrees available for students.
This particular field of study is usually composed of different skills from a myriad of subjects including photography (both digital and non-digital), conventional physics, criminal law or (any kind of law) and of course, any kind of chemistry subject with focus on DNA analysis. Another benefit in taking a forensic chemistry course or science degree is the fact that it is the basis for any medicinal practice whether dental, medicinal or veterinary. Quick employment for specialists in this field is normal because of the rising crime rate.
Forensic science can be used in hospitals, police investigations, most types of laboratories, lab techs and holders of a forensic science degree can be employed as death investigators, forensic computer specialists or forensic scientists. Other jobs include lie detector test tech support, computer analysts, crime-related statistical or forensic engineers, and psychological profiling assistants. Internship at police-departments is given during the third year that in turn is an important requirement for a forensic science degree. This also is a good way for students to experience authentic crime-scene investigations real time.
Emphasis must be given to skills that are similar to the scientific method of research, analysis and presentation. Specialization in Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Molecular Biology, and of course, Crime Scene Investigation, is pursued by students in this field. There are different kinds of certification programs as well for students who have undergraduate courses like law, dentistry or medicine and would like to augment their skills with forensics.
